Wara to Waya Chronicles (Surf Searching Part 3)

Home  (continued)

This is the continuation and the final leg of the Wara to Waya Chronicles. For two days, i was still at my hometown for my flu to be fully healed. But a shitty thing happened, I lost my voice! due to harsh sore throat I got in Samar. Although I drank lots and lots of ginger tea.

I was invited by my friend to come visit their place in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur for a fiesta. I was still feverish when I took a Van to Ormoc City. Now this is an adventure!

No Turning Back

I got to Ormoc City and rode another Van for hire bound for Maasin City. My initial plan was when i get to Maasin, I will get a bus to Liloan, Leyte and from there, I will ride a Ro-Ro towards the port of Lipata in Surigao del Norte.

But when I got to Maasin, some dude told me to ride a bus to San Ricardo because its faster there. Now I have to go back to Bato, Leyte and into San Ricardo which took me a half day to get there. I arrived San Ricardo Port at around 9pm and still feeling feverish.

I got a ticket to the Ro-Ro ride towards Lipata and ate some instant noodles and crackers just to fill my stomach. I didn't feel like eating that time anyways. After several hours of waiting, Ceres Buses from parts of the Philippines came. These busses were heading to Davao City which is kind of far from where I want to be. But thats not my problem.

Ro-Ro Ride

Well, the best part of the damn trip. It started to rain very hard. I heard there was a typhoon and is heading to Luzon area which was quite far from where I am. The boat loaded like a hundred busses, dump trucks, private cars and all sort of vehicles. I was seated outside but with a tarp cover just to see the view of the very dark dark sea. Then the boat starts to move and then starts to rock. Then it rocked very hard. Cars below me starts to do this annoying alarm noise. I was like.. Oh man.. Im gonna die! I don't even know somebody in this damn ro-ro boat. Now, the rain got even stronger and stronger, winds picked up and the boat rocked kind of hard that nobody in the boat dared to walk. Now, some water got into the boat. I don't know where it came from, maybe the rain, maybe from the sea. I don't want to know. lol. I was busy packing my phone into the water tight drybag. I texted my Mother that I had the worst boat ride ever. She is even worried than I am. lol. And by the way, we were in between the Philppines and the Pacific Ocean!

Luckily, the trip was only two hours. But that was the longest two hours of my life.

Where Was I? that frikkin Large waves.. lol..

That damn Roro Ride! LOL

Lipata Port

I got to Lipata at midnight and kind of safe. Now I am in Mindanao territory. I have to go to the backpacking lodge in Surigao City which would take over 30 minutes to get there. I took a motorcycle for hire because its faster. Some guy that I do not know also took the same ride to lessen the fare. But at least they took me to the place I want to be and not rape me haha. And it was still raining very hard that time. Funny how raindrops became pins and needles during our 150kph motorcycle trip towards Surigao City.

Surigao City

So, I am still very far from where I want to be. Around 3 hours to be exact. But first, I have to find the nearest Jollibee. My voice was disappearing and I had colds. Although the fever was gone, I am still not feeling well. I took a multicab heading to the Terminal then a Van for hire towards Lanuza and I have to wait for more than an hour for the Van to move its metal ass.

Surigao Terminal

The trip went ok, had lunch near the road with a view of some islands. Then came Carrascal, the mud capital of Surigao del Sur. So slippery, that the Van that I was in danced the Macarena. Its ok, its only 50-100 feet of cliffs and ravines below. You wont feel anything. I was thinking, "what the hell was I doing". But no! I have to go to Cantilan to meet my friend and drink the local wine. Then, there was this guy beside me with his portable speaker playing a very loud annoying music. Its going to be a long trip!

Cantilan Surigao del Sur

At last my destination! I was thinking seafoods, waves, and local wine! Andrew took me to his place and toured me around. That time his girlfriend was there, for a week now. I was supposed to go there earlier but I was stuck in Samar for a very long time lol.

Anyways, we didn't waste any time and see some of the festival things and ate the unlimited food they have to offer. The next day, we went to see the Lanuza Surfing spot but there were no "Bayud" as it was not surfing season yet.

We met Leo, an Austrian guy who married a local there. He was the only Austrian Surfer there. Had a few talks with him. Then fiesta came, as usual, we went from place to place looking for food.. lol...  We stopped by Andrew's cousins place. We almost ate all the "Saang" there and beer.

The next day, we went to the beach area, and again it was still not surfing season so there no waves. Andrew's cousin, Louanne mentioned that they will be going to Ayoke Island and we immediately tagged along.

Ayoke Island

That Island! We met new friends there Chris & Kipong. They were there for nearly a month building wooden surfboards. I think they had really fun time there. No electricity, no television, no internet, just the island, few locals, seafood and the waves.

They lend us their surfboards and off we go! Surfing! The waves was great.. 1-3 feet of waves, beach break, sunny day, that felt good. Although it was not surfing season, those waves were still great! Caught a few waves and decided to call it a day.

Going Back

Oh well, going back is a drag but we have to. All of us has to get back to the real world (not for me though). And recently, we just heard that there was a ship that sank in Cebu area due to collision. Rode a van towards Surigao City, met Ankays cousin there. Toured us around for a bit then sent us off to the pier towards Cebu! Oh well, Cantilan, we will meet again!

There was a tragedy that happened a day before, better look for the life jackets and save your life!

As usual, we just drink and enjoy the ride.

Check out that Hull! The ship that collided with the passenger ship killing hundreds.

Wara to waya Chronicles just ended in around 3 weeks. I had a great time, met people and heard three philippine dialect. Yes, I want to go back there in the future. Longer days, more surfing and less worrying. :)
