Calicoan Surfing Again!

Image
I was able to visit Calicoan Island, Eastern Samar last September 11-13, 2015. It has been a long time since I last went there . That was before the devastating Category 5 Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) . Now everything has changed. I think even the reef! It was smooth this time so, no more sharp rocks on the way to the lineup! Waves of Calicoan

Paraiso: a hidden paradise in Palompon, Leyte

Image
Paraiso of Palompon, a view from above While everyone is going to Coron, Palawan to see the famous limestone cove, there is a similar spot in Palompon but without the big limestone cliffs and the crystal clear water and yeah its far from Coron's beauty but very much cheaper. People call it Paraiso a hidden paradise. It is just a few

Wara to Waya Chronicles (Surf Searching Part 3)

Image
Home  (continued) This is the continuation and the final leg of the Wara to Waya Chronicles. For two days, i was still at my hometown for my flu to be fully healed. But a shitty thing happened, I lost my voice! due to harsh sore throat I got in Samar. Although I drank lots and lots of ginger tea. I was invited by my friend to come visit their place in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur for a fiesta. I was still feverish when I took a Van to Ormoc City. Now this is an adventure! No Turning Back I got to Ormoc City and rode another Van for hire bound for Maasin City. My initial plan was when i get to Maasin, I will get a bus to Liloan, Leyte and from there, I will ride a Ro-Ro towards the port of Lipata in Surigao del Norte. But when I got to Maasin, some dude told me to ride a bus to San Ricardo because its faster there. Now I have to go back to Bato, Leyte and into San Ricardo which took me a half day to get there. I arrived San Ricardo Port at around 9pm and still feeling f...

Wooden Surfboards of Ayoke Island

Image
I heard that if you really love surfing and want to get better at it, you can make your own wooden surfboard and stay for more than a month at Ayoke Island. This little island is located more than a kilometer in Cantilan Surigao del Sur. A very peaceful fishing place near the pacific. During off-season, there were still waves more than 3 feet high and during the amihan season, more than 1 meter waves. I was with a friend when I visited Ayoke last August 13, 2013 and met these surfer dudes Chris & Kipong which were making their wooden boards for nearly a month now. Got stoked and caught a few waves there. Although it was off-season, still there were ridable waves. The wooden surfboards of ayoke island were great by the way. Here is some Special Tips for you badass beach bums. Go to Cantilan Surigao del Sur. (by air, by sea, by land.. either way.. youll get there) Buy 1 month+++ food supply plus flashlights and candles as there is no electricity there. Buy Plywood, som...

Wara to Waya Chronicles (Surf Searching part 2)

Wara to Waya Chronicles (Surf Searching part 2) Continued from ( Surf Searching part 1 ) A surfer from ABCD Beach Another part of my unexpected adventure! Parting ways While everyone was going straight to Tacloban City then to our hometown Palompon, I decided to take another route which was from the town of Dolores to Borongan City on a Jeepney. The most convenient ride so far… Not! I have to ride more than two hours of sometimes paved roads and sometimes rocky, sometimes wet, and even bumpy. I sat next to a sleepy old man and whenever he fell asleep, he simply tilts his head in my shoulder… That was sweet! Lol  Jeepney (Dolores to Borongan) P80 I arrived at Borongan City Eastern Samar in one piece and unscathed. Hailed a pedicab to the nearest terminal bound for Guiuan Eastern Samar.  But when I got there, the ones going to Guiuan were rusty old school jeepneys. These ones might be used since World War II lol and what made it worst is the tr...

Wara to Waya Chronicles (Surf Searching part I)

Image
I was invited to go surfing with my surf buddies in Guiuan Samar but I have never thought that I could go much further. While having a drinking session on my favorite place owned by a friend. Vincent mentioned that he will also go to Samar for some fiesta but earlier! I immediately tagged along. Now, the new plan was tag along with Vincent to Can-Avid Eastern Samar for a short time then, head to Guiuan to meet with my surf buddies. And that was basically it! But wait... Can-Avid Eastern Samar Got there on time for more than 8 hours! Its really far. and so far, I like it since it is very provincy and quiet. I was acquainted with the owners a very long time ago. We were playmates then when computers and playstations were not yet invented. Had a really great time there since it was their annual fiesta celebration and what makes it fun, is the famous Eastern Samar blackout! So no more noisy videoke sessions for you drunkards!! I was able to explore the place, got some few d...
